Porcelain Veneers: What to Expect

Learn if you are a candidate for porcelain veneers by scheduling an appointment with Dr. Brock Hyder at Payette Dental. Patients who have extensive tooth decay or suffer from chronic bruxism, or tooth grinding, may find other treatments to be more effective. Before treatment, Dr. Hyder will assess your oral health and review your budget and goals.

Porcelain veneers are made of thin shells of dental ceramic. These shells are reflective and color-matched to teeth for a natural look. The dental veneer treatment consists of several appointments. During the first appointment after your initial consultation, Dr. Hyder will prepare the tooth by removing a small amount of the tooth structure. This is to create room for the veneers and create a surface that it can successfully bond to. Several molds of your teeth will be taken. They will be used to create the temporary restorations and also sent to a dental laboratory where the permanent teeth veneers will be fabricated. When ready, the permanent veneers are bonded to the front and side of each tooth being treated. Porcelain veneers can last 5 to 10 years with the proper care. You can brush and floss veneers twice a day just like natural teeth.

Can porcelain veneers fall off?

It’s very rare for porcelain veneers to fall off on their own. However, veneers may occasionally chip or crack. Your dentist can remove the veneer and replace it with a new one.

Will my porcelain veneers feel normal?

A brief adjustment period will be needed to get used to your new veneers. You may have some sensitivity in your teeth as well. In about two weeks, you’ll be able to talk and eat normally with your restoration.

When will my porcelain veneers need to be replaced?

With proper maintenance, veneers usually last around 11 years but can make it up to 20 years. Proper care includes visiting our Payette, ID dentist office every six months for a regular checkup and brushing and flossing daily. The healthier your teeth are, the longer your dental veneers will last. Additional things you can do to extend of the life of them include: avoid chewing on hard things such as ice or pen caps, do not use your teeth to open things, and limit continuous consumption of staining beverages such as coffee and red wine.
